#DMUlocal is committed to regenerating and maintaining the most beautiful and historic areas of Leicester.
Since 2012, students involved in the Canal Clean-up project have been working tirelessly to make sure the city’s waterways are looked after.
Along with our partner the Canal & River Trust, DMU Square Mile volunteers spend a couple of hours each week tidying up towpaths and building bird houses so both walkers and wildlife can enjoy the environment.
The area around the River Soar, close to campus, is regularly mistreated, with common problems being litter, graffiti and rubbish in the water.
A group of dedicated volunteers sacrifice their time to give something back to the community and protect the wildlife while making new friends and learning about Leicester.
Students who volunteer also benefit from:
- Free professional training
- Ongoing support and assistance from the #DMUlocal and Square Mile teams
- Recognition in their Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR) when they graduate
- DMU Square Mile certificate to support achievements (this can be obtained after completion of the student experience evaluation)
This is a fantastic opportunity for DMU students from any degree course to make a difference and gain vital employability skills that will make their CV stand out.
