BusinessWorks places De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) students with specialist knowledge into small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) where they can showcase their abilities and benefit Leicester.
Working with around 40 local charities, sports clubs and other firms, #DMUlocal has seen more than 100 students engage with real-life challenges.
As a result these firms have benefited from a variety of improvements such as enhanced strategic planning, human resource management, marketing and efficiency measures.
So far BusinessWorks has:
- Increased the annual turnover of various sports clubs in Leicester
- Helped various SMEs expand thanks to effective marketing campaigns and increased revenues
- Helped local football clubs, through a partnership with Leicestershire FA
BusinessWorks also boosts students’ employability by providing them with crucial skills such as leadership, teamwork and problem-solving.
The project is made up of groups of five to six students, who work with an allocated SME for a 12-week period, researching and working on solutions to an identified problem.
After this period, groups make a presentation to the SME, at which point they may be asked to implement their findings.
Along with the chance to experience a real workplace, every student is enrolled in the Lean Six Sigma Green Belt project management course, giving participants something that will stand out on their graduate CV.
