I wish I would have considered volunteering sooner because I’ve benefited from my Square Mile experience massively. Through my Paired Reading Partnership, I have learnt so much about myself and made so many happy memories that I will treasure and be proud of in the years to come.
I will never forget the monumental sense of pride I felt the first time a student was able to figure out words they had previously struggled with, using the methods that I had taught them. Or the first time they smiled at me because they realised they were capable of achieving more than they initially thought. That feeling of accomplishment was second to none and I hope that they remember to keep on persevering because they’ll get there in the end, it may just take a little while longer.
Volunteering with Square Mile this year changed my life. It helped me focus on something else during what was a very difficult time, it taught me about the kind of person I am and the kind of teacher I want to be in the future. Although these things may seem small on the grander scale, they mean a lot to me and I will be forever grateful to Square Mile for providing me with this opportunity.
To anyone considering a placement of any kind with Square Mile, don’t hesitate to do it because, if it’s the right placement, it has the power to change your life.
